We began celebrating our home this weekend. ”We” are Newton residents who live somewhere on the 175,000 acres that make up this diamond-shaped county. ”We” are different ages and different races. ”We” represent a mixture of backgrounds, experiences and achievements. And “we” have one very important thing in common – our home.
At Celebrate Our Home “we” found a visual diary of our County – its historic, natural, governmental, nonprofit, faith-based, civic, recreational, and cultural assets – in one place and at one time.
At Celebrate Our Home “we” met local businesses who have a product they create and sell right here at home.
“We” met government officials from the County, Water and Sewerage Authority, School System, Covington, Oxford, Porterdale, and Newborn who told us all about the services “we” pay for with our tax dollars.
“We” met the Chamber of Commerce President and Lisa, whose skills at selling Chamber memberships is only exceeded by her enthusiasm.
“We” recorded our Newton County story for The Covington News and “we” marked our home on a county map tended by a young adult raised and educated in Newton County who was volunteering for the event.
“We” listened to great music from Johnny Roquemore and Friend and watched performances by members of our next generation of leaders.
I feel blessed to be amongst the “we” that make up the citizens of Newton County. Come see the beauty of our home, meet other Newton residents, listen to great music, make new friends, and celebrate our home this weekend at Alcovy High School. Saturday afternoon from 4 – 7:30pm. ”We” will see you there!!!!

I hope I will be able to attend the next one at Liberty MS. Sometimes the weekends are booked with ballgames, and family outings. Will citizens have some input on the future plans?
I have some concerns on a personal level. There is nothing available for young adults with special needs when they graduate from High School (age 21). There are no jobs for them, no day programs- except for Independent Enterprises- (I’m not sure if that is still around), and no transportation! The Miracle League will be built- eventually, but it will only be used on weekends. What about the other days of the week? If we now have a Senior Center, why can’t there be a center for the developmentally delayed? Rockdale has a program, but there is a waiting list. They also have a Therapeutic Rec. department, but we do not. There are no safe group homes, or social programs. Any ideas?
